Over 4000 folk songs are housed at the Middlebury College library in Middlebury, Vermont. The collection is due mainly to the work of philanthropist Helen Hartness Flanders of Springfield.
For 35 years she traveled the state and recorded authentic folk songs and music passed through families from one generation to the next. Most of the songs are of the Anglo-Saxon tradition - one describes an old-time community event called a “Paring Bee.”
Vermont Public Radio’s Nina Keck delved into the Helen Hartness Flanders collection and shares some prized recordings with us.
