Soul Searching
Thursday, November 30
Tucked into the hillsides two hours from New York City, a spiritual retreat center called the Omega Institute for Holistic Studies has become known as a place where seekers can explore the many manifestations of spirituality. Christian prayer, meditation, drumming, and "talking to the other side" are some of the the many so-called "doorways" provided for those in search of something they don't believe institutional religion can provide. Close examination reveals the ancient roots of pilgrimage as a pathway to spirituality, which one writer has called "the inner lining of religion."
Listen as NPR's Lynn Neary takes a look this growing exploration of religious alternatives on Thursday, November 30.

Practical Faith
Friday, December 1
The new spirituality is changing the way many people 'practice' their faith. Instead of focusing on religious doctrine, seekers are adopting practices that connect spirituality to daily life at home and at work. And instead of seeking out a preacher, many people now consult a 'spiritual director' to support their meditation, prayer, visualization, and silence meant to keep body, mind and soul in touch with the spirit. Define-it-yourself spirituality is an unmistakable challenge to traditional religions, many of whom are retreiving their discarded rituals and ceremonies in order to stay competitive. Hear more from NPR's Lynn Neary has more on Friday, December 1.
