Redefining the Melting Pot
Throughout the twentieth century America was described as a melting pot, a stew and a tossed salad. As we enter the twenty first century the U.S. is more culturally diverse than ever. One out of every ten Americans is now foreign born. And the number of Hispanics, Asians, and Black Americans has never been higher. Many Americans struggle with how large of a role their traditional culture and racial identity should occupy in their daily lives. How do you not let your culture get erased by the American mainstream? Join host Juan Williams and guests for a look at how heightened sensitivity to racial and ethnic identities is changing the concept of American identity. What's happening in the melting pot?
What Is the Latinization of America?
The Latinization of America -- it's a phrase as ubiquitious these days as Ricky Martin, Christina Aguilera or the Taco Bell chihuahua. But what does it mean? Is being Latino different than being Hispanic or Chicano? What does a first generation Puerto Rican immigrant have in common with a third generation Mexican-American? How is American life experienced differently by a Cuban-American in Miami or a Guatamalan in North Carolina? Join Juan Williams and guests for a look at how the broad spectrum of Latinos is part of the Changing Face of the American demographic landscape.
