On the April 30 show, in the aftermath of the Columbine shootings, reporter Phillip Martin talks to young people about how they're influenced by hate culture. Boy: "I have used the word 'nigger' and 'Jew.' " Martin: "Why?" Boy: "Because it's just the way I think of them. I think of, like, niggers are like bad or something. But -- and Jews. But, like, I think of Jews as like cheap people. You ask 'em for, like, a dollar and they don't give it to you or something. That's why they're, like, so rich." Martin: "These kids say they get their ideas about race from TV, what they hear around town and from popular music ..." Contents Copyright 2001, National Public Radio |
