Look Who's Planting Bamboo!

Listen to Ketzel as she talks about invasive plants. Tune in to Weekend Edition Saturday where the impossible can come true. Ketzel gets Scott Simon into the garden, where he plants, yes, a well-behaved bamboo.

June 1, 2002 -- Yes, it's been a long time coming, no, it hasn't been easy, and oh my, wasn't it worth waiting for: Scott in his black designer jeans and flowered gloves, covered in (his word) "shmutz." We call it soil. Hard to say what you'll find more amazing, the fact that he's in the garden at all, or what he's doing in the garden. The subject is evergreen, ever-lovely and ever-clumping bamboo.
Hole
Expert Preparation

Thanks to producer/garden owner Charlie Mayer, Scott did not have to tax himself digging the hole.
Gloves
Suiting Up for the Dirty Deed

Kvetching all the while, Scott dons a gift from the Doyenne: A pair of gardening gloves.
Plant Upside Down
Which Way Is Up?

Per Ketzel's instructions, Scott takes the one-gallon umbrella bamboo from The Bamboo Garden in hand.
Shoveling
That Boy Can Really Backfill

Coming down the home stretch, Scott tucks the bamboo into its morning-sun/afternoon-shade bed.
Mulch
The New Maven of Mulch?

Not to worry, Ketzel. Scott finds no enchantment in the warm, woodsy smell of bagged mulch.
All Done
Still and All, He Did It!

After a good soak, the plant's care is now up to Charlie Mayer. Stay tuned...

O.K., enough with the entertainment, let's get on with the gardening advice. Follow these links for an introduction to the wrongly-maligned world of beautiful, benificent bamboo.
